“Catus Heart” 2015 Acrylic on wood 5”x7"

The painting celebrates the heart-opening potential of Trichocereus cacti (such as san pedro and Peruvian torch). Each time I sit with cactus, I return to what matters. All the stories, mental and egoic constructs melt away as the wisdom of the heart blossoms like a flower in the desert. Cactus shows you what you need to see in order to walk in alignment with your heart. The spirit in cactus is one of love and guidance, and while it is strong, It cares for you and carries you through the experience.

In this painting, a group of people bath in the glow of cactus, having blossomed in their hearts. They sit in meditation in the desert sands, themselves rising to form dunes in the shapes of skulls, falling back to the sand itself, representing the coming and going of the physical body. In the center, the immortal should is depicted as a flaming heart seeing in all directions, pupils dilated by the cactus. At the very top a cross section of the cactus bears the eye of the plant itself, gazing down in pure benevolence.

To awaken the heart is the most important thing we as humans can do, and so it is my mission in art to paint our heart-opening allies out of the shadows and into the light.
